Dental Protrusion: When the upper anterior or front teeth protrudes or extends forward excessively over the lower anterior or front teeth, it is called “Protrusion”. Protrusion is also, at times, referred to as “Buck Teeth” or an “Overjet”. Another kind of protrusion is “Bimaxillary Protrusion”. In such cases, both the upper front teeth as well as lower front teeth protrude too far forward.

Causes of Dental Protrusion: There are various causes leading to Protrusion, like, Genetic issues; Improper swallowing habit; Thumb sucking habit; Tongue thrusting habit & / or Deformed jaws or improper formation of skeletal bones

Issues arising due to Dental Protrusions: It affects the aesthetic looks of the face and smile; Biting & Chewing problems; Poor oral hygiene as the mouth are almost always open; Gum disease; Increased Dental trauma in case of any injury & / Or Speech impediments.

Aligner treatment for Dental Protrusion: The most widely opted orthodontic treatment for mild & Moderate cases of Dental Protrusions are “Clear Aligners” treatment. This is because, the Aligners are transparent (almost invisible) – giving aesthetic appearance to the face and at the same time, very light, very smooth, easily removable hence very hygienic. The aligner treatment involves a series of custom made plastic trays that are fabricated as per the individual’s teeth profile. These can be easily removed while having meals, brushing or flossing the teeth and also can be washed and cleaned twice a day. This helps in keeping the bacteria at bay and maintain a healthy oral health. Aligners help move the teeth and jaws gently & gradually into the ideal positions over a period of time.

The duration of clear aligner treatment for crossbite can vary depending on the complexity of the situation. Generally, treatment can take anywhere between 12-18 months. During the course of Aligner treatment, the patient will need to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating, and brushing / flossing the teeth as well as to clean them.
