What is an Anterior Crossbite: An anterior crossbite is a misalignment of the teeth, where when the jaws are closed the upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth. This type of malocclusion is just the opposite of normal bite, where the lower front teeth slightly overlapped by the upper front teeth.

Anterior crossbites are caused by various reasons such as:

  • Genetics
  • Abnormal tooth development
  • Deformation of the jaw such as a narrow upper jaw
  • thumb sucking or tongue thrusting

Anterior crossbites result in a variety of dental issues like:

  • Aesthetic issues like unattractive smile
  • Difficulty biting and chewing
  • Speech difficulties
  • Gum disease
  • Wear and tear of the teeth, resulting in damage to Enamel
  • Teeth chipping or scaling and fractures

Orthodontic treatment can correct anterior crossbite by way of braces or clear aligners, which move the teeth into an ideal position. Sometimes in severe cases, in order to correct underlying skeletal issues, a surgical treatment may also be required.

Aligner treatment for Anterior Crossbite

Clear aligners treatment are widely preferred to treat the cases of mild to moderate anterior crossbite. Clear aligners are a series of removable plastic trays which are custom-made as per the patient’s teeth profile. These are 3D designed and fabricated to gradually move the teeth into their ideal position.

Each set of Aligners are required to be worn for two weeks, for at least 20-22 hours a day to get the optimum results, after which next in the series are to be worn. Aligners apply gentle pressure on the teeth and guide them them into the required position. The severity of the case determines duration of the treatment and the number of aligners needed for the treatment of the case. Ideally the treatment period ranges from 6 to 18 months.
