What is Crossbite: A crossbite is a type of malocclusion, also known as a teeth misalignment, which occurs when the layers of upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth while the upper jaw & lower jaw are closed. The top teeth protrude into the space ordinarily occupied by the lower teeth as a result. A typical bite positions the upper teeth just slightly outside the space occupied by the lower teeth when the jaws are closed. A crossbite can affect one or more teeth in the upper or lower jaw, and it can occur on one side of the mouth or both sides at the same time.
Crossbite can lead to a number of issues, like difficulty in biting & chewing the food, uneven tooth wear, pain in the jaw, and even speaking impediments. If the teeth aren’t properly aligned, it might be tough to clean in between them and around the gums, which can lead to cavities and gum disease.
Crossbites are mainly of two types:
- Anterior Crossbite: An Anterior Crossbites develops when the both the upper and the lower jaws are closed. it occurs when one or more of the top front teeth are positioned behind the bottom front teeth. This can affect one or both of the upper and lower front teeth. An anterior crossbite can cause the teeth to wear down, make it harder to bite and chew food, and even have an effect on the speech.
- Posterior Crossbite: A posterior crossbite refers to the condition when one or more of the upper back teeth are positioned inside the lower back teeth when the jaws are closed. It can lead to uneven wear on the teeth, resulting in difficulty to bite & chew properly and also soreness in the jaw. It can also have an adverse effect the growth and development of the jaw and also can affect normal speaking ability.
Clear Aligners & Crossbites: Clear aligners are one of the most preferred, effective and convenient way to correct a mild or moderate crossbite. It usually involves a series of aligners that are custom made for the teeth and worn over them. These aligners are made to move the teeth and jaws gradually into the ideal positions. They are almost invisible and can be easily taken out to eat and brush or floss the teeth. They need cleaning & washing twice a day when they are removed for brushing & flossing the teeth.
The duration of clear aligner treatment for crossbite can vary depending on the complexity of the situation. Generally, treatment can take between 6-18 months. During the treatment, the patient will need to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating and brushing teeth.
