Clear Aligners or Invisible Aligners are removable BPA free thermoplastic trays that are transparent and light weighted. These are tailor made and are used to correct mild or moderate malocclusions as well as to straighten the teeth.
Fabrication of Clear Aligners- The step by step fabrication process of the clear aligners are asunder:
- Consultation: The patient has to consult an orthodontist to evaluate whether the Aligner treatment is advisable or not.
- Teeth impressions: If the orthodontist approve for the treatment, he will take a digital scan or impressions of the patient’s bite (teeth) to create a 3D model of the same
- Digital planning of the treatment: With the 3D printed model, digital designs of series of aligners are created to guide the teeth to the desired position – slowly, gently & gradually.
- Fabrication of Aligners: 1) Once the planning is finalized, 3D printable models of these aligners are generated for different stages of the treatment plan. 2) Next, the 3D printer prints these in the form of models, step by step, which subsequently are created into Clear Aligners.
- Finishing: Once the clear aligners are created, they are trimmed as per the patient’s teeth profile and buffed to a smooth finish
- Inspection: Next, the orthodontist will inspect every piece of aligner in the series for proper fitment and for any defects before fitting them on to the patient’s teeth
- Fitment & usage: First set in the series of clear aligners will be fitted on to the patient’s teeth, which has to be worn for around 15 days before switching over to the next set of aligners in the series.
In order to achieve the best results, the patient has to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, maintain proper oral hygiene and religiously follow the instructions of the orthodontist till the treatment is over. In general, the total treatment period varies from 6 weeks to 18 weeks depending on the severity of the case.
